THE HEN NIGHT
The Dog & Gun was unusually busy for a Tuesday evening. Pru was grateful that she had got there a little earlier than they had planned to meet. Her premature arrival had ensured their favourite snug by the window and a double round, eagerly purchased in anticipation of the arrival of Bree and Lucy. The dream team were together for the first time in ages, and it was for a very special occasion. A few grumbles of complaint that she had chosen The Dog & Gun for her hen night had been forthcoming from her friends, and an even louder collective groan had met her ears when she had announced that it would be early in the week to avoid having a humdinger of a lingering hangover on the day itself. Undeterred, she had carried on with her plan of just a quiet evening and a few drinks with the people that meant the most to her.
Her fingers curled around the gin balloon as she held it in her cupped hand. She watched the lemon bob up and down, fighting with the ice for centre stage. It made her feel quite nostalgic, as it was a wobbly bar stool and a wedge of lemon in the beer tent that had thrown her into Andyâs arms at the Chapperton Bliss County Crafts Festival. It had been lust at first sight and the rest, as they say, was history. She smiled to herself and undulated the fingers of her left hand, allowing the diamond to pick up the light. By the weekend there would be a wedding ring to adorn that finger too, just in time for their first Christmas together as a married couple. She scrunched her shoulders up as a shiver of excitement ran down her spine.
âWhoa, girlfriend, youâve started before me.â Bree slumped down next to her, transferring a smattering of snow from her scarf onto Pruâs shoulder.
Pru brushed away the offending flakes. âYour drinkâs there, and a bag of crisps. Any sign of Lucy?â
Grabbing the glass that matched Pruâs, albeit hers had a strawberry instead of a slice of lemon, Bree held it to the light in admiration whilst shaking her head. âIâve been looking forward to this all day.â She took a large gulp. âLucy sent me a text to say she would be a bit late â something to do with their boss wanting a tête-à -tête with her and Andy over the Dottie job â which I pointed out canât happen as a tête-à -tête is for two people not three.â
âThreeâs actually an orgy.â Pru laughed, and then just as quickly caught herself with an image of Murdoch Holmes cavorting naked around the incident room. âEew, scrap that thought!â
The door to the Dog & Gun blew open, sending a freezing cold draught across the worn stone flooring. It reached the window snug and morphed into a swirling eddy under their table. It made Pru shiver and briskly rub her chunky knit-clad thighs, her idea of a glamorous outfit for the evening having made way for a more practical and warm pair of leggings.
